Kimberly-Clark Launches Water-Saving Promo

From the Environmental Leader:

Kimberly-Clark’s Scott Naturals brand is giving away 750,000 Scott SmartFlush toilet-tank inserts over the next two months, which the brand claims can save a typical family of four 2,000 gallons of water a year, reports AdAge.com. The green-themed promotion is supported by national TV, print and in-store advertising.

Doug Daniels, brand manager of strategy and innovation for Scott, told AdAge that the brand’s heritage of thrift, combined with the 40 percent-recycled Naturals line, is a perfect fit with an item that saves water.  Kimberly-Clark launched the Scott Naturals line in April 2009.

Daniels also said that flushing accounts for about 25 percent of household water use, so this is an opportunity to help save water and “consumer’s money one flush at a time.”

The Smart Flush bag will be available free with a purchase of Scott Naturals bath tissue beginning in September. When placed in the toilet tank, the material in the bag absorbs water and expands, reducing the amount of water consumed in each flush by up to one liter.

The Smart Flush bag will be given away exclusively on Scott Naturals 8 pack and 12 pack bath tissue at retailers including Walmart and Target nationwide in September and October, while supplies last.

The SmartFlush inserts, which the manufacturer believes can last as long as a decade in the toilet tank, is considered a ”first-of-its-kind innovation.”

Vestas V112 Turbine Targets Low/Med Wind Speed Sites

Vestas discusses the launch of its new V112-3.0 turbine, aimed at the low and medium wind speed sector, which the company says comprises 75 percent of the global market. The offshore version can be used at high wind sites.

The wind turbine manufacturer says the new turbine was designed from the beginning with new technologies, and how it was going to be transported and installed as well as maintained for at least 20 years.

The turbine can withstand virtually any climatic conditions from tropic heat and humidity to arctic cold, making it suitable for any onshore site with low or medium wind and offshore sites with high winds. The first V112-3.0 MW will be delivered to customers in Q3 2011.

EPA Announces Native American Youth Artwork Contest: “Help Fight Environmental Crime”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced a poster artwork contest for Native American students aimed at protecting the environment by encouraging the reporting of possible environmental crimes through EPA’s tips and complaints website.

The contest, open to all middle and high school students who are members of a federally recognized tribe, is a chance for young people to draw their visions of environmental damage from their viewpoint. EPA will use the winning artwork on its website and on posters encouraging the reporting of environmental violations.

Special agents with EPA’s criminal enforcement program will present plaques to winning entrants at their schools, and will give a presentation on what it is like to be an EPA criminal investigator.

The artwork will be judged on creativity, originality and how well it depicts the message of environmental violations.  Entries must be received or postmarked by Oct. 8, 2010 to be considered. Winners will be announced in November. Students should submit artwork to:
