Lubber, says in a Harvard Business Review opinion\u00a0piece that global problems like climate change \u201cdemand new business models.\u201d \u00a0Lubber\u00a0warns that not creating new models will result in more than \u201canother financial-sector\u00a0meltdown,\u201d but environmental and social problems \u201con a scale never before seen.\u201d\u00a0She thinks that bringing pay \u201cinto the equation\u201d is a quick way of grabbing attention.\u00a0Several reports agree with Lubber.\u00a0 A Ceres report, The 21st Century Corporation:\u00a0The Ceres Roadmap for Sustainability, says, \u201cSustainability performance results\u00a0must be a core component of the evaluation of senior executive performance and\u00a0compensation packages.\u201d \u00a0A report by Pascual Berrone of IESE Business School,\u00a0and Luis Gomez-Mejia of Arizona State University, published last year in the Academy\u00a0of Management<br \/>\nJournal says firms need \u201cincentive mechanisms to dissuade managers\u00a0from avoidance.\u201d \u00a0British utility company National Grid announced last year it\u00a0would partly base executive compensation on meeting targets for reducing carbon\u00a0emissions. \u00a0Joe Kwasnik, group head of climate change for the company, explains\u00a0key points to Environmental<\/p>\n<p>Leader on how the company is implements its scheme:<\/p>\n<p>(1) Recognize that change is coming, and get ahead of the curve. \u00a0National Grid\u00a0decided to \u201cweave\u201d into its internal budgets and operations, the fact that many\u00a0governments are setting targets to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) 80 percent by\u00a02050;<\/p>\n<p>(2) Establish a baseline and internal metrics. National Grid first set a\u00a0baseline measurement of its carbon footprint;<\/p>\n<p>(3) Create a culture that rewards\u00a0carbon reduction. Which is why the <strong>US EPA Food Recovery\u00a0Initiative<\/strong> and the <strong>WasteWise Program<\/strong> have joined forces\u00a0to challenge business, industry, and institutions to reduce, donate, and recycle\u00a0as much of their food waste as possible \u2013 saving money and helping protect the\u00a0environment.\u00a0 And through the <strong>Food Recovery Challenge<\/strong>, participating\u00a0organizations have the opportunity to receive national recognition for their outstanding\u00a0Challenge achievements. WARM is available both as a Web-based calculator\u00a0and as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (355K WinZip archive). \u00a0The Excel-based version\u00a0of WARM offers more functionality than the Web-based calculator. WARM calculates\u00a0and totals GHG emissions of baseline and alternative waste management practices\u2014source\u00a0reduction, recycling, combustion, composting, and landfilling. \u00a0The model calculates\u00a0emissions in metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE), metric tons of carbon dioxide\u00a0equivalent (MTCO2E), and energy units (million BTU) across a wide range of material\u00a0types commonly found in municipal solid waste (MSW).
