{"id":2837,"date":"2010-10-18T09:56:24","date_gmt":"2010-10-18T16:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unrbep.org\/?p=2837"},"modified":"2010-10-18T09:56:24","modified_gmt":"2010-10-18T16:56:24","slug":"new-tactic-in-california-for-paying-pollution-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unrbep.org\/dealerportal\/new-tactic-in-california-for-paying-pollution-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"New Tactic in California for Paying Pollution Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STOCKTON, Calif. \u2014 Officials who have tried and failed to clean the air in California\u2019s smog-filled San Joaquin Valley have seized on a new strategy: getting millions of drivers to shoulder more of the cost.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with a fine of at least $29 million for exceeding federal ozone limits, the San Joaquin Valley\u2019s air quality regulators <a title=\"Sept. 23 article.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bakersfield.com\/news\/local\/x47915002\/Drive-a-car-You-may-pay-more-for-our-bad-air\" target=\"blank\">are proposing<\/a> an annual surcharge of $10 to $24 on registration fees for the region\u2019s 2.7 million cars and trucks beginning next year. A decision is expected when the governing board meets on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Although the surcharge is not expected to change how much people drive or what cars or trucks they buy, air pollution experts say it is a harbinger of the future.
