Here are posts\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/energy-efficiency\/whats-the-deal-with-the-rebound-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\">one<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/energy-efficiency\/does-the-rebound-effect-matter-for-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/energy-efficiency\/how-does-the-rebound-effect-fit-into-the-big-picture-on-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">three<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s briefly review what we\u2019ve covered so far in my rebound series:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Climate change means we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a lot, beginning immediately.<\/li>\n<li>There are two ways to reduce GHG emissions from energy: increase low-carbon energy supply and\/or decrease total energy consumption.<\/li>\n<li>Ramping up clean energy supply can\u2019t be done fast enough to keep us within our carbon budget, certainly not in the short- to mid-term, if at all. So we\u2019ve got to use less energy.<\/li>\n<li>There are two ways to reduce energy demand: reduce the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Energy_intensity\">energy intensity<\/a>\u00a0of the global economy and\/or reduce the growth of the global economy.<\/li>\n<li>Substantially reducing global energy intensity turns out to be extremely difficult, thanks in part to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/energy-efficiency\/whats-the-deal-with-the-rebound-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\">rebound effect<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If energy intensity can\u2019t be reduced quickly enough, then the only answer left (other than failing to stabilize global temperature at all) is slowing GDP growth. Yikes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So where does this leave us?
