{"id":4869,"date":"2012-04-17T09:49:36","date_gmt":"2012-04-17T16:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unrbep.org\/?p=4869"},"modified":"2012-04-17T09:49:36","modified_gmt":"2012-04-17T16:49:36","slug":"nv-energy-cooling-system-to-cut-water-use-by-281m-gallons-a-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unrbep.org\/dealerportal\/nv-energy-cooling-system-to-cut-water-use-by-281m-gallons-a-year\/","title":{"rendered":"NV Energy Cooling System to Cut Water Use by 281m Gallons a Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April 13, 2012<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.environmentalleader.com\/2012\/04\/13\/nv-energy-cooling-system-to-cut-water-use-by-281m-gallons-a-year\/\">Environmental Leader on-line<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NV Energy\u2019s coal-fired Reid Gardner Station north of Las Vegas will reduce its water withdrawals by more than 281 million gallons annually with a Nalco cooling system, the companies said.<\/p>\n<p>The reduction in freshwater use also reduces the facility\u2019s wastewater by the same amount, Nalco said.<\/p>\n<p>The station uses both river and well water in its cooling system, but the source water contains high concentrations of silica, which can cause damaging buildup of sediment in the cooling system. Nalco\u2019s 3D Trasar technology controls the cooling water chemistry with fluorescence-based monitoring and silica dispersant to prevent silica from accumulating,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nalco.com\/documents\/Case-Studies\/CH-1045.pdf\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the Nalco website.<\/p>\n<p>Nalco said that the deposit occurs when the recirculating water\u2019s silica concentrations exceed 150 ppm and the temperature is less than 70\u00b0F (21\u00b0C). In NV Energy\u2019s system, silica concentrations were about 230 ppm on average. The incoming water temperature was about 80\u00b0F (27\u00b0C) with a 20\u00b0 temperature drop across the tower.<\/p>\n<p>NV Energy also is using 3D Trasar boiler technology at its coal-fired North Valmy Station. The station\u2019s steam turbines were experiencing deposits that reduced overall efficiency.
