Grants of $1080 will be available for each kilowatt hour\u00a0of energy storage added. The program is capped at $67 million.<\/p>\n<p>This new, if temporary addition to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablebusiness.com\/index.cfm\/go\/news.display\/id\/24182\" target=\"_blank\">Germany&#8217;s feed-in law<\/a>\u00a0is meant to reduce peaks in electricity production and take pressure off the grid.<\/p>\n<p>Storing excess energy in batteris can reduce peaks in electricity production up to 40% and grid capacity by 66%, according to\u00a0 Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>California Solar Plant W\/ Energy Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first large-scale solar plant in California that includes energy storage starts\u00a0construction early next year, after having been approved to sell the energy to PG&amp;E.<\/p>\n<p>SolarReserve&#8217;s 150 megawatt Rice Solar Energy Project\u00a0now has all its permits. Located in eastern\u00a0Riverside County and bearing a $750 million price tag, it&#8217;s expected to generate more than 5,300 solar jobs (direct and in-direct) during its 2-year construction period.<\/p>\n<p>When complete, the\u00a0project will supply power to over\u00a065,000 homes during peak electricity periods.<\/p>\n<p>The solar tower design focuses sunlight from thousands of mirrors onto a central tower that contains molten salt, which retains heat and can produce power at night.<\/p>\n<p>There will be 8-10 hours of fully dispatchable energy storage, a key factor in the project&#8217;s approval. In fact, more than 20 hours of full power energy storage is possible, making it equivalent to coal, natural gas and nuclear plants.<\/p>\n<p>SolarReserve&#8217;s flagship 110 MW\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablebusiness.com\/index.cfm\/go\/news.display\/id\/23393\" target=\"_blank\">Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project<\/a>\u00a0in Nevada comes\u00a0online late this year &#8211; the first commercial scale molten salt\u00a0tower in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Another 150 MW project has been approved in\u00a0Arizona, the 150 MW\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablebusiness.com\/index.cfm\/go\/news.display\/id\/24307\" target=\"_blank\">Crossroads Solar Energy Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>California&#8217;s Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has rejected solar project proposals because they lack\u00a0energy storage and is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablebusiness.com\/index.cfm\/go\/news.display\/id\/24036\" target=\"_blank\">considering approving only those plants that have it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: SustainableBusiness.com News In February, Germany will begin\u00a0offering incentives for\u00a0people to\u00a0tie\u00a0energy storage systems to their\u00a0solar arrays.
