{"id":7082,"date":"2015-01-13T09:27:30","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T16:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unrbep.org\/?p=7082"},"modified":"2015-01-13T09:27:30","modified_gmt":"2015-01-13T16:27:30","slug":"put-a-lid-on-it-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unrbep.org\/dealerportal\/put-a-lid-on-it-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Put a Lid on it"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-7080\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unrbep.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/HW-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"HW\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Why are closed containers for hazardous waste so important?<\/h4>\n<p>January 13, 2015<\/p>\n<p><em>By Ken Trankle<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the most common RCRA violations I run across is the failure to \u201cput a lid on it\u201d.\u00a0 If you are storing hazardous wastes, the container must be closed at all times unless you\u2019re adding or removing waste from a container.\u00a0 Mismanaged facilities will often leave drums open, allowing fumes to escape into the area and risking spills. \u00a0Other examples of poor hazardous waste management include using plastic wrap and aluminum foil coverings over containers or a piece of plywood across the top of a drum.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is the definition of closed container? \u00a0First, use containers and lids that are leak proof, compatible with the wastes, and in good condition.\u00a0 Next, closed means using a lid with a vapor tight seal \u2013 shut tightly enough that the contents cannot spill if tipped over and chemical vapors cannot escape into the air. \u00a0Make sure that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lids are on<\/li>\n<li>Lids are screwed tight<\/li>\n<li>Snap rings are latched and tightened<\/li>\n<li>Bungholes are securely capped<\/li>\n<li>Funnels, if used, are closed and screwed into the container<\/li>\n<li>Containers and lids are compatible with the waste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure all the employees that work with hazardous waste containers are trained properly on how to close them the right way, and why it\u2019s important.\u00a0 As an owner or manager, you should regularly check to make sure hazardous waste containers are closed.<\/p>\n<p>As Benjamin Franklin used to say \u201can ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure\u201d.\u00a0 While closed containers are absolutely critical, secondary containment systems prevent accidental leaks or spills from becoming environmental hazards.\u00a0 Secondary containment systems \u2013 such as a (sealed) concrete pad, a pan or tub underneath the containers \u2013 inexpensively catch any release or spill that could occur when filling or emptying a container, or if a container leaks.<\/p>\n<p>Additional information on this subject and waste storage requirements can be found at the following link: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/unrbep.org\/pdf\/fact_sheets\/Put_a_lid_on_it!1011.pdf\">http:\/\/unrbep.org\/pdf\/fact_sheets\/Put_a_lid_on_it!1011.pdf<\/a>,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why are closed containers for hazardous waste so important?
