WATER SMART LANDSCAPES REBATE PROGRAM
IT’S THE LAW
Did you know that beginning in 2027, Nevada law AB 356, will prohibit the watering of nonfunctional grass at southern Nevada businesses? What is nonfunctional grass?
- Streetscape turf: grass location along public or private streets, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots, including business streetscape frontage areas
- Frontage, courtyard, interior and building-adjacent turf: grass in front of, between, behind, or otherwise adjacent to a building or buildings on a property not zoned exclusively for single-family residences, including maintenance and common areas. Review the laws and ordinances.
Nevada Water Smart Landscapes Rebate Program
Replacing nonfunctional turf makes good business sense – it can save you serious money on your water bills. According to Southern Nevada Water Authority, for the average 15,000 square foot conversion to water-smart landscaping, as much as 825,000 gallons of water can be saved every year. That’s real money spent on water. Every year.
Did you know that Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) is currently offering to rebate business owners up to $3 per square foot of grass removed and replaced with desert landscaping? You can receive $3 per square foot for the first 10,000 square feet of grass removed and $1.50 per square foot above that. Apply online but make sure you participate in a pre-conversion site visit before completing any work – removing your grass without SNWA approval will make your conversion ineligible for any rebates.
Remember, you don’t have to replace your grass with just rocks and a couple of cacti. Water smart drip irrigation is still allowed and can support a variety of attractive landscaping. Need ideas? Visit Springs Preserve or check out SNWA’s list of recommended plants.
